The Day Everything Changed
On January 17, 1995, a powerful earthquake struck Kobe, Osaka, and the surrounding region, causing widespread destruction. The area, home to 3.5 million people and a key part of Japan’s economy, suffered severe damage. Essential services like electricity, gas, water, and transport were cut off, and many homes—especially old wooden ones—were destroyed by the quake or fires that followed.
The disaster left over 6,400 dead, tens of thousands injured, and hundreds of thousands without homes, facing a harsh winter in temporary shelters.
